Background
|
The spread of HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nepal is staggering with a massive and rapidly mounting disaster especially amongst children. The worst affected is the children who are suffering from HIV. The number of HIV infected children in Nepal has exceeded more than a thousand as reported in January 2010 by National Center for AIDS & STD Control. But the authentic number could be much higher than it appears to be. Discrimination towards these children prevails in various forms in our society due to the stigma related to HIV. With careful analysis of the lives of the people living with HIV/AIDS suggested that the worst affected is the future generation, which due to lack of proper educational facilities and parental guidance were exposed to the risk of resorting to illegal activities and girls facing the risk of being dragged into sex trafficking. This increases the danger of scaling up the HIV/AIDS infection scenario. Sensing
the urgency of the problem and realizing that very little is
being done in this regard, Punarbal Plus was determined to intervene
in the consequences of the disease. It therefore, opened a school
"Punarbal Shikshya Sadan" in May 2007, a school without discrimination
to meet the immediate needs of the deprived children. "Punarbal
Shikshya Sadan" imparts education to all the children but the
priority of school is those children who are infected and affected
by AIDS and the children who do not have an opportunity to attend
school due to poverty. |
Rationale
|
Infected children are deprived not only from the social activities but from education too. They do not attend school mainly due to stigma and discrimination from education departments, school teachers and heads and parents. Affected children do not attend for reasons of stigma and discrimination amongst children and parents. There is also the need to work to bring economic support to their families and siblings. The inability to pay educational expenses is another big factor why these children are not able to attend school. The suffering of these children cannot be taken away but one can help in reducing their plight by providing brighter prospects for their future. |

|
To contribute towards minimizing the impact of HIV/AIDS through education & awareness. |
Mission
|
